New Class Details: Animal Drawing Workshop
In describing his motivation for structuring the course, David quoted Randy Pausch, who said, “Without the fundamentals, the fancy stuff won’t work.” The goal of this workshop is to provide a strong foundation to build on and inform your artistic growth as you work on animal character designs, drawing animals from life, doing imaginative creature design, and drawing invented animal poses. Understanding skeletal structure, musculature, and being able to study and draw an animal from life are the essential elements that will later support “the fancy stuff”.
On the first day of the workshop, we’ll meet at a museum, where David will give a lecture on anatomy and skeletal structure, as well as key anatomical landmarks that will carry over when we’re drawing animals from life on the following day. At the museum, there will be time for creating studies of the skeletons, as well as receiving one-on-one instruction from David.
On the second day, we’ll be drawing animals from life in order to understand the unique set of problems and solutions presented when drawing an animal in motion. David will demo some animal drawing techniques, and we’ll study several different types of animals with a focus on capturing gesture and character.
Class size is limited to 15 students to ensure plenty of personalized attention. After years of drawing animals, David has arrived at a concise and direct way of simplifying and explaining animal anatomy, as well as expressing the essential character qualities of an animal. Whether you are new to animal drawing or a returning student seeking a refresher course, you’ll find instructive tips and guides to further your skill level and provide direction for your continuing drawing studies.
Handouts covering David’s lectures will be provided to students at no cost. David would also like to offer a student discount on select books and dvds for people enrolled in the class: get 50% off Animal Character Design: Grizzly Bears and 50% off both of David’s dvds!
