Mentor of the Day: Craig Elliott
We’re so excited to have Craig Elliott returning as a mentor for Fall 2014! Craig has been with us since we started the Mentorship program, and he’s helped an ever-growing number of mentees polish their portfolios and reach for their dreams. Craig has an impressive list of professional credits as a Visual Development artist in the animation industry, including Disney, DreamWorks, Blue Sky, Illumination Entertainment, Nickelodeon, and many others. He is also an accomplished illustrator and fine artist, and one of his large oil paintings was recently awarded a Spectrum Gold Medal (one of many that Craig has earned over the years), and he received a gold medal at the Society of Illustrators West earlier in 2014.
Craig’s skill as a painter spans digital and traditional media, with his extensive experience painting light effects in oils informing his digital work in the animation industry. His past mentees have used his feedback to make great strides in their digital painting and understanding of color.
You can often find Craig exhibiting at most of the large comic and art conventions, selling his work and painting a model for the passing convention attendees. He is friendly and approachable to everyone who passes by, and he puts the same level approachability into his relationships with his mentees. He has so much to offer, and so much experience to share!
Laura Price, Craig’s mentee during the Spring 2014 term, described the experience as excellent, explaining, “I enjoyed the effort Craig put into every meeting. He really knows what he’s talking about and it’s clear that he loves what he does and wants to share his skills and experience with others.” Laura put her time with Craig to good use, completing an entire new visual development project including two character lineups, three realistically rendered characters, pages of character interactions, prop designs, vehicle designs, and a full landscape environment painting.
Her advice to Craig’s Fall 2014 mentee is: “Have ideas for a new project planned and go through the story and your ideas with Craig first. He’ll take you through the beginning stages (from planning shapes and strengthening your story) which will give your project a strong foundation!”
Craig is looking for one hard-working mentee from anywhere in the world to mentor over the ten-week course. If you are looking to improve your portfolio and develop some great painting techniques, mentoring with Craig will be a wonderful experience for you!
