Michel Breton

“Cartoonist, comic strip artist, concept artist, production designer, art director, director, character designer, traditional animation layout artist, background artist and as producer”; these are the different hats that Michel Breton wore in the cartoon and animation industry. He has worked for animation studios such as Hanna-Barbera, Chuck Jones Film Productions, The National Film Board of Canada, Laika Inc, Cinesite and Zanuck Entertainment.

Some of the award winning projects included The Boxtrolls, Coraline, The Triplets of Belleville, Noël Noël and Heavy Metal The Movie. In 1994, he co-founded Fourmi Rouge Animation studio, producing commercials and as consultant for movie studios, such as MTV.  He helped set up the production unit for the feature movie Beavis and Butthead Do America. One of Michel’s recent pet projects was a 3-year inquiry, exploring the French language situation in Montréal, Québec and France. Titled, “La langue à terre”, this documentary made its debut in 2013 at the FFM Festival international des films du monde de Montréal. He also juried at the 2015 Montréal Stop-Motion Animation Festival.

In addition, Michel Breton has worked with the well-known Belgian comic strip artists Turk and De Groot on their series Léonard le génie, Clifton and Robin Dubois. He contributed work that was published as hard cover books and magazines such as Tintin magazine.

Mentor Preferences
Ideal Mentee:  It is not necessary that the mentee have the highest level of skills or experience. The qualities I am seeking are curiosity, sensibilities towards his or her artwork, eagerness to learn, hard working, engaged, punctual, being open and who can handle constructive criticism.

10-Week Plan: The plan will depend on the mentee’s level, field of experience, specialties and personal goals. An initial first session is required to set-up a made to measure plan to fit the mentee’s goals. It can range from the basics, such as perfecting the rules of perspective, composition, storytelling improvements with visual design, image movement, color, the importance of styling, art direction in film.  I will be touching on philosophies and team player attitudes.  Examples such as, being opened minded, how to support the movie making process while selling your own ideas when dealing with a director of a project.
