Landscape Painting with Kathy Altieri
Wednesdays, 9a – 1p
September 7 – November 9 (10 weeks)
Level: Open to all; Prior drawing experience is recommended
In this landscape painting class, we will be working outdoors, on location, using gouache—a portable, lightweight, water-based paint. Emphasis will be on color, composition, and personal expression. We will explore several methods for doing small color studies (appropriate for a sketchbook), and discuss some of the options for turning these sketches into larger studio pieces. The setup we will use is designed not only for quick, easy studies, but also for taking your paints with you when you travel, hike, camp, or have an hour at lunch in a park. Painting sites will be around, or a reasonable driving distance from, Pasadena. Most locations will be within easy walking distance of the car. Prior drawing experience is recommended, but the class is suitable for all levels. Students should bring all supplies to the first class.
About Kathy Altieri
Kathy Altieri is a production designer at DreamWorks Animation. Her credits there include How to Train Your Dragon, Over the Hedge, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and The Prince of Egypt. Prior to DreamWorks, Kathy worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation on movies such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Kathy originally began painting landscapes at lunch breaks and on the weekends to inform her understanding of color and light for her career as a background painter. Now, whether working with oil, watercolor, gouache, or ink, creating these sketches is one of her favorite pastimes. Kathy exhibited for several years at the Wendt Gallery in Laguna Beach, and has taught and lectured at art schools and conferences internationally.
